The 2013 harness racing season at Tir Prince started in earnest on Saturday and what a night it was. 9 action packed races in front of a bumper crowd from all over the UK and Ireland was just the way we wanted to start the season. Mochart was extremely impressive winning the opener by 8 lengths in a time of 2.02.70, keep an eye out for this 3 year old son of Arts Conquest. Andrew Cairns made it a quick fire double on the card when No Regrets made no mistake winning cosily in 2.06.9 from a 10 yard trail. Mill Road obliged in the 3rd for David Bevan in a time of 2.07, Wellfield Alfie in 2nd once again found one too good. The first of the graded races saw 11 grade 1’s go to post, the betting ring was lively beforehand with Camden Callan, Porterstown Road and Charlie Pan all proving popular, it was however Jason Podmore and Blue Incredible who took the honours coming down the wide outside in the straight to win by a length in a time of 2.04..2. The Trot was next with Mitt Popcorn giving Stevie Lees his first winner at the track since his return from Canada, its a great boost to North Wales Harness racing to have him back training horses. Race 6 saw Ladyford Indianna produce arguably the performance of the night, this 3 year old filly beat older horses coming from the 8 draw she showed a real tough streak followed by an electric turn of foot in the straight, this daughter of the Preacher Pan is going places. In Race 7 Best of The Fleet lived up to the pre race hype to win in 2.02.4, this Irish Trained local owned (RGB Webster) son of Cambest is no stranger to the track and won nicely for his 4th lifetime course and distance win. Race 8 saw a great battle between 2 former Welsh cup winners Ayr Mission and Infinity, drawn 1 Ayr Mission was fired out of the gate by Rocker Laidler in an attempt to make all, he came under serious pressure from Infinity at the three quarter pole and was almost headed however under a fierce drive from Rocker he dug in and won by a head in a very close finish. Finally it was time for the free for all and not even the late wthdrawal of Change The Locks could take the shine of this top race, the bookies were taking no chances in the betting ring with FORAFEWDOLLARSMORE before the race with the odds as low as 1/4 on. Everything seemed to go wrong for him in the first part of the race however and with Rhyds Fivestar going nicely up front it looked like there could be a turn up however at the half Dollar got going and by the time they were in the back straight the writing was on the wall as this top class former Crock of Gold and Musselburgh champion showed why he is the current track holder to win by 2 lengths in a time of 2.00.
